SOCRATES: A Two-dimensional Model
SOCRATES (latitude x altitude) extends from the Earth's surface to 120 km and includes fully interactive radiation and chemistry with 67 chemical species. The energy budget includes absorption of solar energy, infrared radiative transfer from a number of species in the stratosphere, non-LTE CO2 radiative transfer in the MLT region, chemical heating, and parametrization of molecular diffusion and Joule heating. The impact of waves on dynamics and chemical transport is calculated from interactive parameterizations of gravity waves and planetary waves. A diurnal cycle is stimulated for the chemistry. This model is most useful for simulation mean evolution over time periods of a season or more.
